In spot light: SFE Artist Nazig Azezian

Nazig Azezian began playing the piano at the age of eight, at the East Helsinki Music Institute, under the tutelage of Leena Nikula. From 2007, she started her university studies at the Sibelius Academy studying Music Performance under Juhani Lagerspetz, Teppo Koivisto and Hamsa Al-Wadi Juris. In the spring of 2014, Azezian completed her Master's degree in Music, finishing her piano diploma with excellent grade.
Azezian has attended numerous masterclasses for pianists, led by Erik T. Tawaststjerna, Liisa Pohjola, Eero Heinonen, Matti Raekallio, Konstantin Bogino and Iivari Ilja. In 2012, Azezian received an award at the Sibelius Academy's internal Helmi Vesa piano competition. In her artistic work, she has benefited from the support of the Wegelius Foundation (Wegelius-säätiö) and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
Azezian has studied lied in a versatile manner with Ilmo Ranta, and complemented her studies by attending a lied masterclass by pianist Matti Hirvonen, a masterclass in German lied by pianist Hartmut Höll, and a masterclass in lied recording by pianist Ilkka Paananen and baritone Jorma Hynninen. Azezian performs regularly in lied concerts in Finland and abroad, and has recently performed with baritone Jorma Hynninen and soprano Johanna Rusanen-Kartano.
Nazig Azezian has been an active performer as a solo and lied pianist, and played chamber music in various ensembles in series of concerts and at festivals. In the spring of 2012, Azezian was invited to play with flutist Nairi Azezian at AGBU's 'Young Armenian Talents' concert in London. The Jean Sibelius 150th Jubilee Year record, released in January 2015, features Sibelius' compositions and new arrangements of, for example, Karelia Suite and Finlandia. The recordings were done at Ainola and Järvenpää-talo (Järvenpää House), and feature Azezian alongside cellist Jussi Makkonen, baritone Esa Ruuttunen, mezzosoprano Annastiina Tahkola and violinist Susanna Mieskonen-Makkonen. In the summer of 2014, together with cellist Jussi Makkonen, Azezian filmed music videos of arrangements made for the record, of Impromptu op. 5 no. 5 and Drömmen op. 13 no. 5, in Pielinen.
Since the spring of 2013, Azezian has performed in narrative Oskar Merikanto and Jean Sibelius school concerts alongside cellist Jussi Makkonen and soprano Laura Pyrrö, for audiences already adding up to over 100 000 listeners. During the Jean Sibelius 150th Jubilee Year, concerts will also be held at Ateneum art museum, Helsinki Music Centre and at music festivals in Norway. In January 2015, an illustrated children's book on Sibelius, accompanied by a CD, was published by Lasten Keskus. The book came about as an extension of the school concert idea and is written and illustrated by Katri Kirkkopelto. The CD features music by Sibelius, interpreted by Nazig Azezian and Jussi Makkonen. With the support of the Ministry of Education, the book will be distributed to all elementary schools in Finland at the start of 2015.
