Jean Sibelius´ Home
Ainola seen from the West
The beginning of Ainola
Ainola, was built from timber in the autumn of 1904 for Jean and his family. The design of the house was created by famous Finnish architect Lars Sonck. In the house lived Jean, Aino and his daughters Eva, Ruth, Kirsti, Katarina, Margareta and Heidi.
While building the house Sibelius had two wishes: he wanted his study to overlook Lake Tuusula and he wanted a green fireplace. The ground floor contained a study for the composer, a dining room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a room for servants. The upper floor was completed in 1911. It comprised a bedroom for the parents, a study with a better view of the lake and a guest room. Part of the upper floor remained as an open loft for storage. At the same time the downstairs study was converted into a living room.

Jean and Aino Sibelius lived in Ainola until the end of their days. Jean died at Ainola in 1957. Aino went on living 12 more years in Ainola before she also died in 1967. A couple years after their parents deaths, the Sibelius daughters sold Ainola to the Finnish state in 1972. After the house was sold the `Ainola Foundation´ was established. The Foundation’s aim is to preserve Ainola, as it was during their lifetimes, in as unchanged a form as possible and to cherish their memory and tend to their last resting place at Ainola. Ainola was opened to the public as a museum in June 1974.
Ainola welcomes around 20,000-25,000. The guests have a chance to experience Ainola and everything surrounding the building with their own eyes. After visitors have gone through the tour they can drink a refreshing cup of coffee at the cafeteria located next to the house.
Aino and Jean Sibelius´s final resting place in the back garden of their beloved home Ainola.
